Ian McAndrew, owner of New Jersey-based Iron Fox Typewriters, was gifted a 1934 Underwood Four Bank typewriter by Tom Hanks.
The typewriter arrived on April 17. “What I found was a brand new green and yellow golf shammy with theon it … a typed form letter that explained the nature of the gift and his intention in sending it,” McAndrew said. “This came signed by Hanks and neatly tucked into a matching green envelope.
McAndrew said every year there are fewer everyday objects left that are from the pre-digital era and don’t require an internet connection or rely on electronics to work. He joked about typewriter repair being a spiritual journey for him, often calling work nights typewriter church. “At the time my wife and I owned a small niche restaurant and a food truck,” he said. “We’d had a brilliant season. However, I was creatively drained and decided that I would make good on a dream that I had always had: own a functional typewriter.”
