While his worshipers originally knew him as Herakles, the strongest Avenger now goes by Hercules - however, neither is his actual name.
The mythological side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has grown a great deal recently, with alien deities worshiped in distant regions of the galaxy as well as classic characters like Hercules and the rest of the Greek pantheon being adapted from comics to film. However, fans of mythology may wonder why Marvel's Greek demi-god goes by his Roman name, rather than the original "Herakles.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Herc is a relatively modern hero who keeps up with the times, and this character trait is definitively linked to his name in Hercules vol. 4 #1 by Dan Abnett, Luke Ross, Guru-eFX, and Joe Sabino. Speaking to some curious kids, the immortal hero states that he long ago accepted that most people know him as Hercules, to the point where that name has become an adjective for heroic strength. Hercules admits it would be "foolish to reject that kind of recognition.
Hercules' Name Comes With a Lot of Baggage However, being known as Hercules has its downsides. In the same series, Herc admits that he's been treating the modern age as something of a rest period - he lends a hand to heroes like the Avengers when needed, but has essentially been living the high life after millennia of heroism. This casual attitude has resulted in a reputation for carelessness and excess, often exacerbated by a godlike hedonism that has curdled into full-on alcoholism.
In recent years, Hercules has been making a new name for himself among the stars as a Guardian of the Galaxy. After sacrificing centuries of his life to save Earth, he's become a more mature hero who does not feel compelled to take the spotlight, and he's been pursuing a romance with his teammate Marvel Boy. Though still relatively new by comics standards, Marvel Boy and Hercules' pairing has been one of the healthiest romantic relationships Herc's had yet.
