The now familiar rituals of these tragedies come with a new dimension -- physicians describing exactly what such weapons do, which are details that were previously unmentioned out of respect for the dead. This coincides with a wave of fury and incomprehension among victims' relatives and Americans who want to change the easy availability of rifles that can claim multiple lives in seconds.
But the bipartisan law signed by President Joe Biden late last month, which fell well short of banning assault weapons, showed the limits of the political will in Congress to act, despite majority support in the country for more gun safety measures. The lack of appetite among the conservative base for banning these weapons narrows the political incentive for Republican lawmakers to act. And as the GOP tracks further to the right, there's even less support for gun restrictions.
