Thanos has a long and confusing relationship with Death, both the concept and its personification, but after decades of continuity, fans can't exactly agree about their origin.
Marvel's Thanos has always had an unusual relationship with death, but many fans disagree on exactly how this relationship works. As a young boy, Thanos feared death, but after the death of fellow classmates made him an outcast, he embraced it. So much so, that Death herself became a guiding force for Thanos, leading him down a path of seemingly endless murder and destruction... Or did she?
In 2013's Thanos Rising, a five-part series by Jason Aaron and Simone Bianchi, fans get an intimate look at what turned the mutated Eternal into a mad God. From his birth, Thanos was confronted with death: Upon seeing his mutations for the first time, Thanos' mother, Sui-San, attempted to kill him with a scalpel, before being restrained and having her son whisked away. Later in life, Thanos would claim he remembered that moment and carried it with him his whole life.
It isn't unheard of for cosmic beings such as death to get involved in mortal affairs. The Celestials take a very hands-on approach to their relationship with mortals. Even beings like the anti-interventionalist Watcher has found himself intertwined in the events of countless timelines. So it isn't out of the question that Death may have come to Thanos, seeing his potential for destruction, to be her mortal emissary.
Thanos Rising, while giving fans an insight into what makes the Mad Titan tick, may have brought with it more questions than answers. It's difficult to imagine a universe where Thanos, a being that literally invented murder on his planet, isn't a harbinger of death and destruction. But this series calls into question whether his relationship with Death was his doing, making Thanos all the more mysterious in the long run.
