SpiderManAcrossTheSpiderVerse producer Phil Lord explains why the animated film explores six different Spider-Man universes.
Phil Lord, who serves as one of the producers of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, explains why the Spider-Verse sequel explores 6 different Spider-Man universes. One of the most successful animated films of the 2010s, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse saw the big-screen debut of Miles Morales. Following its box office and Academy Award success, Sony is moving forward with a two-part sequel slated for release across 2023 and 2024.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY In a new feature from Empire Magazine, Lord, who is one of the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse producers, expanded upon why the sequel is set to focus on six different Spider-Man universes. For the creative team, it was important to up the stakes from the first film as it explored one animation style.
“The first film had one animation style that dominates the movie. This movie has six. So we’re taking those tools, adding all the things we learned on The Mitchells Vs The Machines, and then growing them further to accommodate the ambition of this movie. Which is to wow you every time you enter a new environment, and also to make sure that the style of the movie reflect the story, and that the images are driven by feelings, as opposed to some egg-headed art project.
However, while the Spider-Verse sequel will follow familiar faces, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will see the arrival of several new Spider-heroes from the comic books. Making her animated big-screen debut is Jessica Drew, another Marvel heroine who uses the Spider-Woman title, with Issa Rae portraying her in the film. The "Japanese Spider-Man," better known as Takuya Yamashiro from the Spider-Man TV series in 1978, will also pop up in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
With the unlimited potential of the Spider-Verse concept, it will be fun to see how Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse tackles not one but six different universes as they flesh out the franchise. To hear Lord wanting the animation styles to be unique and stand out explains a lot about why the sequels are taking a bit longer to come out.
