Jerry McDonald has been with the Bay Area News Group for more than 30 years, with a heavy concentration of NFL football since the Raiders returned to Oakland in 1995. His all-time favorite athlete is a right-handed pitcher at Division III Linfield College in Oregon.

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan gestures from the sideline against the Denver Broncos in the fourth quarter of a NFL preseason game at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif., on Saturday, Aug. 19, 2023. It’s not the usual modus operandi of a football coach, but Shanahan has his own way of doing things and being frank is included in a style developed over 13 years as an NFL assistant and seven years in charge of the 49ers.

Shanahan is only 43, but he has seen plenty since starting in the NFL as a quality control assistant under Jon Gruden in Tampa Bay and winding his way through assistant coach and coordinator jobs in Houston, Washington, Cleveland and Atlanta before being hired by the 49ers in 2017. Mind you, playing for Shanahan doesn’t include hearts and flowers. Last season when Shanahan was discussing how well Brock Purdy accepted criticism, he recalled his initial experiences with Matt Schaub.

Shanahan shares blunt critiques which aren’t personal but very direct, and it’s no coincidence that his father Mike operated in a similar fashion. Gray areas don’t exist as to what’s expected on and off the field. Motivation doesn’t come with a college-style Knute Rockne pep talk. Shanahan was prepared with video for Samuel from a disappointing season which came after a huge contract extension. Samuel listened to Shanahan and took the message to heart to such an extent that he told the media all about it and how he wanted to atone for his “awful” season.

Shanahan didn’t like what he saw from his team going into the Dallas game because of a manufactured rabid intensity. He liked what he saw because they went about their business.
