Is there hope that Texans might adopt a reform similar to New York’s? Unfortunately, there isn’t, at least not in the way New York did it. Texas doesn’t grant the electorate the power to directly amend the state Constitution in the way New Yorkers did. But Van Duyne’s challenger, the progressive Jan McDowell, defeated a more moderate Democrat in the primary and went on to lose handily in a district Republicans had redrawn to protect the incumbent.Low voter turnout in the primaries empowers the extremes and weakens the middle. Since 1990, an average of half of Texas’ registered voters have cast a ballot in each general election. An average of around 20% have voted in primaries.
Among the leading structural reforms is ranked choice voting. According to the advocacy group Fair Vote, ranked choice voting was in place in 56 cities, counties and states as of September. The winners, we think, are the people of New York City, who got a mayor who embraces many Democratic positions but who has also been clear-eyed in supporting the role of police in protecting public safety. Adams hasn’t buckled to the far left’s narrative that demands limited policing in the name of social justice. New Yorkers are safer for it and their city is stronger.
