: It’s no longer enough to ask if Biden is too old to govern, but what are the costs of living in a gerontocracy, or rule by elders? Why are our political leaders unwilling to pass leadership on to the next generation? What do they believe entitles them to seemingly never-ending political leadership as their physical and intellectual capacities diminish?
The entitlement piece is crucial here. While the 2024 presidential election cycle has yet to kick off, Biden will likely employ the same rhetorical that sent him to the White House in 2020. He won’t just be the best candidate for Democrats in 2024, he’ll be the mostcandidate. Our only real viable option. Part of that belief is rooted in our nation’s unequal systems of political representation. We don’t elect presidents in democratic ways, it’s true, but Biden has shown himself unwilling to address systems like thethat facilitate the injustice.
That’s because there is more than raw political calculus in Biden’s decision to run again. There’s also entitlement, paternalism, and a very specific theory of change. His 2024 candidacy will likely rest on the premise that it is better for the country to select a candidate who will benefit from the electoral college than to fight for a system that tabulates our votes equally.
