Jason Alexander almost quit Seinfeld. Here's why:
Ask any fan of Seinfeld who their favorite character is, and you're sure to get a wide array of opinions. Ironically, the man behind the title, Jerry Seinfeld, isn't usually found at the top of the list. It's two other names that have left the biggest impression. Michael Richards was perfect as the eccentric next-door neighbor, Kramer. His antics were so loved that the studio audience would erupt every time he entered Jerry's apartment.
It was not hard for Elaine to stand out as the only woman in the group of friends. That minority status wasn't the only reason why Elaine became such a big part of Seinfeld. She steered clear of sitcom tropes as well. This wasn't a woman who loved to cook and sought out a husband and kids. She held her own with the men of Seinfeld and could be just as dirty, vindictive, and self-absorbed as they were. That made it so fun to watch her with Jerry.
Jason Alexander Threatened to Quit 'Seinfeld' Over George's Absence The third episode of Season 3 of Seinfeld was called "The Pen." Here, Jerry and Elaine leave New York City to take a trip to Florida to visit Jerry's parents at the retirement village they live in. It's not one of the best episodes of the series, but it's a good one, with the plot focusing on Jerry being gifted a pen from a resident, one that can write upside down like an astronaut pen.
Jason Alexander has confirmed this to be accurate. In an interview with Access Hollywood in 2017, he said he told David, "If you do that again, do it permanently. If you don't need me to be here every week, I'd just as soon go back home and do what I was doing." Alexander talked about how he could go back to working in theater, which is what he was doing before he got the Seinfeld gig.
