A decade ago, Houston earned the title of 'America's Fattest City,' with 34 percent of residents considered overweight by the CDC. So when Fort Bend County recently ranked among the healthiest communities in the U.S., it was a bit of a surprise.

"When it's hot you don't want to go outside," said Reitzel, who teaches education at the University of Houston's psychological health and learning sciences department,"and being outside tends to be acquainted with health."Despite the heat, Fort Bend finished at No. 291 in U.S. News & World Report's 2022 list of the 500 healthiest communities, with a life expectancy far above the national average.

"I'm constantly seeing people who look different than one another out walking, in cycling clubs," she said."Not to diss Houston, but you hear about people being hit with cars when they cycle. It just doesn't have that infrastructure."
