As the classic queer film gets a new Criterion release, the cast looks back at Hedwig's success

During their warm reunion conversation, they reflect on Mitchell as Hedwig, including when he shaved his eyebrows and the scene where Hedwig wears a heart shirt previously sported byHedwig was created out of necessity, as an exploration of Mitchell’s feelings on sexuality—before language around gender had evolved to the point it’s reached in 2019.

When Mitchell shot the film nearly two decades ago, he was making a queer fairy tale—the rare entry in the LGBTQ canon that was not a documentary, or a gay manifesto, or a trans statement, though some have interpreted it as falling into one of those categories. It was never a movie about David Bowie either—even if Hedwig may sometimes resemble the rocker. “David Bowie once said to me, ‘You got it right,’ which was a little arrogant, as if I was trying to imitate him,” Mitchell said.

The story’s audacious expression of self has attracted Hedwig fans from across the world—East Asia loves Hedwig, Mitchell delightedly noted—a coalition of global misfits. “Not the freaks, but the sweet freaks,” he said. He takes it as a compliment that even non-LGBTQ people can relate to someone as specific and unusual as his genderqueer heroine.

Hedwig has also found new life, of a sort, in Mitchell’s latest project: a 10-episode musical podcast on Luminary about a desperate artist named Ceann Mackay who crowdfunds treatment for a brain tumor. The series,implies that Hedwig lived in the same trailer as Ceann. “It’s autobiographical in terms of my family, but also in terms of Hedwig,” Mitchell said.

As for Hedwig’s own origin story, it lives on through amateur and professional productions worldwide—and, of course, through the film’s latest incarnation. Mitchell hopes that having been preserved by Criterion, the film will become a “perennial, modern
