It’s not like this was a permanent solution for the Stars. The pair only started eight games together, and all came in either March 2019 or October 2019. The Stars preferred to split up their offensively capable defensemen to maximize the amount of time at least one of them was on the ice.
Logistically, the Stars are concerned about handedness. If Heiskanen and Klingberg — both who play on the right side — play together, that leaves two left-handers to play with each other, if the Stars want to keep their top-four intact. Neither Lindell nor Suter have played on their offside regularly, like Heiskanen does.
There have been flashes this season of the Stars’ willingness to put two puck-movers on the same pair. When Thomas Harley was in the NHL in November, he played with Heiskanen for a few games. The pair controlled about 60% of shot attempts and expected goals when on the ice at 5 on 5.Stevens said he likes that Suter and Heiskanen play together on the power play and on the penalty kill, which should help them ready off each other at even strength.
