Northeast Ohio had several communities getting 6 inches of snow or more in an odd turn of events.

An Alberta Clipper is the culprit behind the surprisingly heavier amounts of snow we saw on Sunday, the NWS said on Monday.is a low-pressure system that originates from the north near Alberta, Canada, which is how it got its name, said Rick Garuckas, a meteorologist for the NWS. It typically drops southeast through the upper Midwest, Great Lakes and Ohio Valley regions.

When an Alberta Clipper moves south, it often moves so quickly that it doesn’t have time to gain a lot of moisture. That often causes traces of snow, or at most 2 to 3 inches. But a region can occasionally experience more, especially with artic air making snow dry and fluffy. That is what Northeast Ohio experienced on Sunday.“It’s very similar to yesterday,” he said.

He said that the snow would continue through the afternoon commute and eventually taper off in the evening, with total accumulation in the range of 2 to 3 inches. However, areas in the primary snowbelt area around Lake and Geauga counties -- including the Concord, Chardon and Hampton areas -- could see 4 inches due to extra moisture from Lake Erie.
