Bruiser is the first film released under the Onyx Collective, owned by Disney Entertainment. It makes a difference in regard to where it's streaming.
Bruiser is a coming-of-age drama that follows 14-year-old Darius as he navigates manhood, and though it's by Disney, it's on Hulu rather than Disney+. Dropped quietly on Hulu on February 24th, Bruiser packs a punch with its meditation on masculinity as Darius follows the examples of his father and a charismatic stranger named Porter. Bruiser’s coming-of-age story helps give a voice to black masculinity, a subject that most studios do not green light.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY While the subject could draw comparisons to 2017’s Best Picture winner Moonlight, there isn’t much black coming-of-age content to be found in mainstream media. The Moonlight comparison is only heightened by Moonlight actor Trevante Rhode’s fantastic performance as Porter. Bruiser premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2022 to acclaim. Currently, Bruiser sits at 100% on Rotten Tomatoes with critics praising the story and artistic style.
While The Walt Disney Company majorly owns Hulu, Comcast holds a small percentage which prevents Disney from merging its content with Hulu. In September 2022, Disney CEO Bob Chapek considered merging Hulu into Disney+ because the model had been successful outside the United States. However, Comcast refused to be bought out by Disney, so it may be a while before Disney+ and Hulu content is combined.
Why Putting Bruiser On Hulu Might Be Better For The Movie Based on the audience and Hulu’s smaller release catalog, Hulu may be a better home for Bruiser than Disney+. While Disney+ has a large selection of content and may have a selection of films to celebrate Black History Month, a character-focused drama would do better in a smaller library of films.
As the first narrative film in the Onyx collective, Bruiser shows what can be accomplished when a big corporation puts money into projects from underrepresented groups. Bruiser’s coming-of-age dynamic is told through a black voice, conveying the toxicity of black masculinity. While Bruiser’s father and son conflict may feel familiar, a talented cast and unique vision make Bruiser a harrowing, but beautiful experience.
