Black Panther director Ryan Coogler thought he was going to get fired from the first movie. “I was convinced I was gonna get fired on that movie, ’cause we were falling behind.”

Black Panther director Ryan Coogler explains why he thought Marvel was going to fire him on his first MCU movie. First introduced in 2016's Captain America: Civil War, Chadwick Boseman's superhero next appeared in 2018's Black Panther. The film was a smash hit with fans and critics alike, telling the story of King T'Challa's fight against Erik Killmonger for control over Wakanda's deposits of Vibranium. Black Panther would go on to earn over $1.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY In a recent interview with Kevin Polowy, a correspondent for Yahoo Entertainment, to promote Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, director Ryan Coogler reveals that he thought he was going to be fired while working on the original Black Panther. Coogler explains that he was worried because production on the film was falling behind, but that Marvel producer Nate Moore ultimately assuaged him of any fears he had of being let go.

“[Nate Moore] knew what it was gonna be. He was the only one who knew what it was gonna be while we were making it. And he would say that to me. I was convinced I was gonna get fired on that movie, ’cause we were falling behind. From our vantage point, I was like, ‘Oh, we not doin’ it. We not doin’ well.’ He was like, ‘Bro, you like killin’ it, man. Nobody’s firing you. I’m not gonna let that happen.’ Like a hand on the shoulder kind of thing.

The first Black Panther is renowned for its exploration of African culture and its powerful themes regarding race, for which Coogler is largely responsible as both writer and director. Killmonger is also widely regarded as one of the MCU's best and most empathetic villains, a trend that Coogler has continued in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever with Tenoch Huerta's Namor.

Although it's perhaps still too early to tell, the positive reception to Black Panther: Wakanda Forever bodes well for the prospective Black Panther 3. It would certainly be interesting to see another writer/ director's take on the project, but Coogler is clearly instrumental in the success of the Black Panther franchise and has proven himself the best possible candidate for a third movie.
