Though the relationship between these designers’ work and what feels like a perpetual general mood of doom and gloom isn’t always so explicitly obvious, their approach to fashion design speaks to something larger. People, particularly young people, are feeling the push and pull of wanting to save the world while simultaneously being withdrawn from it by bringing color and creative expression back into their lives.
Getting dressed is becoming fun again, giving us a much-needed respite where we don’t have to take lifeseriously, the perfect antidote to the current state of the world. Still, it’s important to recognize that being ais not just about feeling a sense of release or finding joy, it’s also a way to take back our power, both from the moments growing up in which we once felt powerless, and now, as adults who are trying to come up with scrappy ways to save the world in the best ways that we know how.
