The Office introduces several new characters in its later seasons, and one of season 8's main characters was only meant to be a guest star.
The Office is full of memorable offbeat characters, but one of the series' main cast members was initially meant to only be a guest star. Due to the show's minimal overarching story and heavy use of improv, plans were always changing while working on The Office, with characters getting minor tweaks based on the strengths and weaknesses of their respective actors. The biggest example of this occurs in The Office season 7, where a one-off character was turned into a mainstay of the series.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY The later seasons of The Office were pretty hectic, with actors coming and going due to the series greatly boosting their careers. Steve Carrell left The Office after seven seasons on the show, with his character Michael Scott moving on from Dunder Mifflin in season 7, episode 22, "Goodbye, Michael." Soon after, Kathy Bates' Jo Bennett exited the series, leaving a huge gap in Dunder Mifflin's leadership.
Robert California first appeared in The Office season 7's two-part finale, "Search Committee." David Spade's Robert California is just one of the many candidates up for the job, with guest stars Jim Carrey, Will Arnett, Warren Buffett, and more making cameo appearances in the episode. After "Search Committee," James Spader's character was liked so much that the crew behind The Office asked if Robert California could become a recurring character in season 8.
Another Character Was Originally Supposed To Replace Michael Scott Although Robert California ended up replacing Michael Scott, that wasn't always the case. Catherine Tate's Nellie Bertram was also introduced in season 7's "Search Committee," and she was originally the front-runner for the role. However, due to scheduling conflicts, Catherine Tate couldn't commit to the role, leading to James Spader taking over.
Another actor who was being eyed to replace Michael was Will Arnett. Arnett also appeared in "Search Committee," but similarly to Catherine Tate, he couldn't commit due to scheduling conflicts. Prestigious actor James Spader was surprisingly the one for the role, with Robert California being the one to fill Michael Scott's shoes in The Office season 8.
