The roster is filling up with candidates vying to become the next speaker of the House after the Republican conference dropped Rep. Jim Jordan as their nominee on Friday following three failed voting rounds.
Last week, Scott lost the House nomination to Jordan in a 124-81 vote in a closed-door meeting after throwing his name in the race in a last-minute bid. Johnson included seven “key priorities” he would focus on if elected to the House’s top job: Restore trust, advance a comprehensive policy agenda, promote individual members, engage members, effectively message, build and utilize external coalitions, and develop and grow our majority.House Majority Whip Tom Emmer launched his run for the gavel on Saturday and is currently the highest-ranking candidate in the race.
“We just had two Speaker Designates go down,” Hern said in a statement Friday. “We must unify and do it fast. I’ve spoken to every member of the conference over the last few weeks. We need a different type of leader who has a proven track record of success, which is why I’m running for Speaker of the House.”
Bergman has already secured endorsements from five Michigan Republicans: Reps. John James, Tim Walberg, Lisa McClain and John Moolenaar.Rep. Byron Donalds is a prominent member of the House Freedom Caucus who serves on the Committee on Oversight and Accountability and Committee on Financial Services, announced his run on Friday.
