Despite an increase in the volcano’s alert level several weeks beforehand, the eruption itself was inherently unpredictable. It was a two-minute-long series of short-lived, steam-driven blasts, the sort that provides no advance warning. First, a little explainer on alert levels, because they probably don’t mean what you expect them to mean. Each country with active volcanoes has its own style of alert system, but they more or less work the same way. A high alert level tends to indicate some eruptive activity, whereas a low alert level suggests background activity.
