The White House is expected to name former Delta Air Lines executive Steve Dickson as the new head of the Federal Aviation Administration, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter.

Those reports came just days before Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 crashed and killed everyone on board.
The nomination would come amid intense scrutiny over the FAA's approval of the Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft involved in that crash. Investigators said they detected"clear similarities" between that flight and another fatal crash in Indonesia in October. Earlier Tuesday, Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao sent a memo to the department's inspector general, formalizing a request for an audit of the FAA's certification of the Boeing planes.
