Raging protests against the dictatorship of Basha Assad in Syria are threatening civil war again.
In this photo released by Suwayda24, people stage a protest as they wave the Druze flags in the southern city of Sweida, Syria, Friday, Sept. 15, 2023. The protests in the Druze-majority city have been ongoing for more then three weeks, initially driven by surging inflation and the war-torn country's spiraling economy but later widening to calls for the fall of the Assad government. In 2011, peaceful protests against the dictatorship of Bashar Assad were squashed by his brutal army.
My next call was to a cousin who spoke on condition of anonymity. “These protesters will be killed or thrown in jail like all the other times. With the support of Russia, this guy, , is here to stay. Bottom line in this: When people are dying from hunger, no one cares about a revolution. Democracy and justice are not what we need in Syria right now. We need food, water, electricity, gas…”My brother lives in Latakia on the Mediterranean coast.
How much money does Assad and his cronies need? They have electricity. They have water. They have free gasoline vouchers. They are getting away with stealing the souls of my people, then feeding them to the dogs.
