When Ohio State opened spring practice last month, defensive coordinator Jim Knowles expressed a desire to carve out a role for Sonny Styles.The son of former Buckeyes linebacker Lorenzo Styles firstIt was an impressive step for a freshman who hadto enroll at Ohio State and pointed to a possibility that he could emerge as a larger piece for the defense as a sophomore.
The spot where Styles has largely gotten reps in spring practice has been at the “Bandit,” the boundary safety position in Knowles’ scheme. Styles has rotated with the second team behind Lathan Ransom, the lone returning starting safety who was one of Ohio State’s top tacklers last fall.
