The film is too long and Leonardo DiCaprio is miscast, but ‘Flowers’ delivers a powerful indictment of White American greed.
It’s being hailed as an American classic and a film for the ages, even before most people have had a chance to see it — but does Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” live up to that hype and, more importantly, does it really need to be 3 hours and 26 minutes long?
Scorsese is one of our finest filmmakers — as is evidenced in numerous sparkling scenes here . His important, often gripping epic will rub many viewers raw while exposing the still bloody wound of American history. And it urgently addresses our need to protect and elevate unheard stories, not expunge them from text books and classrooms.
DiCaprio, a confident and versatile actor, seems less assured playing a guy who amounts to little more than a subservient meathead. You just don’t buy that he’s that malleable and dumb. Luckily, the heart and soul of the film lies with the luminous Native American actor Lily Gladstone. She plays Mollie, who, after an arranged courtship, marries Ernest, whose strings, of course, are pulled by puppet master Hale .
