The 49ers embarrassed the Cowboys, the Eagles keep winning, and the Patriots are putrid.
In Week 5, the poles of the NFL started to gain clarity. The Patriots, Giants and Panthers are scraping the bottom. The Eagles, 49ers and Chiefs — just like at the end of the last year — are operating on a higher level than everybody else, with the Lions and Dolphins on their heels. Other teams capable of joining them stumbled, whether it was the Ravens blowing a game in Pittsburgh or the Bills stubbing their toe in London. Most reside in the gooey middle — 19 teams have two or three wins.
The Steelers were dreadful for most of their 17-10 victory over the rival Ravens. Then the fourth quarter arrived and Steelers Things started happening. Pittsburgh trailed 10-3 when Miles Killebrew blocked a punt that led to a safety. A field goal on the subsequent made it 10-8. Pittsburgh fumbled a punt and gave Baltimore possession near the goal line, but Joey Porter Jr. intercepted Lamar Jackson in the end zone.
The first five games of this season, then, have been more than bad — they have been destabilizing. They have forced the Giants to question whether Jones’s contract will become an albatross and, with less urgency, whether Daboll is really the franchise savior that fans viewed him as. Was last season progress or a mirage?
The Patriots appear headed toward the race for a draft pick that will deliver Caleb Williams, Drake Maye or another elite quarterback prospect — a position Jones’s performance has made clear is far from settled. Belichick’s future with the franchise he once turned into a dynasty could be in question. The Patriots’ outlook is so bleak that everything is on the table.
The Jaguars followed last week’s romp over the Falcons by beating the Bills, 25-20. They have annually sacrificed a home game to play in London, and it has given them an advantage: They have more know-how in adjusting to the time difference and the travel requirements. The Bills entered with three consecutive victories of at least 28 points, and they barely woke up before halftime.
