Some previously had been allowed to operate 24 hours if they chose.These types of businesses are defined in Dallas’ city code as adult arcades, adult bookstores or adult video stores, adult cabarets, adult motels, adult theaters, escort agencies or nude model studios. Strip clubs fall under the category of adult cabarets.The city has 27 licensed sexually oriented businesses that are currently operating.
The hours of operation restrictions stem from a proposal from the police department in November. Police officials said they had some officers dedicated to patrolling near sexually oriented businesses in northwestern Dallas since last March in response to shootings and other violent crime that occurred mostly near some strip clubs.
Dozens of strip club workers and supporters spoke in opposition to the plan Wednesday. They said its impact would trickle down from employees at these establishments to tourists and other workers who benefit from the late-night hours, such as rideshare drivers.
