In other words, they pass the Turing test to a high degree, because of a basic assumption that we have about the systems: we assume that if something is writing something intelligent, it must BE intelligent. But obviously, this isn't really true in the case of the large language models. They target, as Ivanova says, coherence – but to the extent that it actually thinks, at least in the ways we are used to, it has to recruit other systems.
In other words, LLMs are great at language, but not that great at thinking, reasoning, or even math. This latter one partly because good mathematicians don't think through their math solely in terms of language. And LLMs are still getting all of their answers from linguistic constructs that they find on the Internet or elsewhere.
