The last month-and-a-half of Rangers baseball has produced vicious swings in both directions on the “they’re back” and “they’ve lost it” scale.

“Last series, we couldn’t do anything wrong. We played so well,” Bochy. “This series, we didn’t do a lot right.”

That, Bochy conceded, was something of a head-scratcher. The Rangers outscored the Blue Jays 35-9 in the four-game sweep north of the border. The bats bashed. The starting pitching held its form. The bullpen, believe it or not, even showed some poise. It was, given the circumstances of where the Rangers stood in the playoff standings, one of their best series of the entire season.

They followed it with — again, circumstances included — one of their worst. The Rangers scored just six runs in three games against Cleveland, and four of those came in the ninth inning of two games that had already been decided. Texas’ biggest bats in Corey Seager, Marcus Semien, Jonah Heim and Mitch Garver combined to hit 4 for 47 with 12 strikeouts. The Rangers scored twice in Sunday’s loss. In the second inning, Leody Taveras and Josh Smith hit back-to-back two-out doubles to take a 1-0 lead.

Bradford was tagged for six earned runs in three innings. On Friday, Texas starter Jon Gray lasted just 3.2 innings and allowed three earned runs before he gave way to a bullpen that allowed nine more. Dane Dunning pitched five shutout innings on Saturday, but closer Will Smith gave up two earned runs in the seventh inning to cough up the lead.“I left some balls over the fat part of the plate, and they did what any MLB team should do,” Bradford said,“ and made me pay for it.

“You just get swept and say, ‘Wait a minute, we had a winning road trip,’” Bochy said. “I guess the best thing you do is look at the silver lining. You’re coming off of a 4-3 road trip, we’re heading home.”It doesn’t make a lost weekend in Ohio any less puzzling, though.Shawn McFarland. Shawn covers preps for SportsDay HS.
