West Virginia men’s basketball coach Bob Huggins was arrested and charged with driving under the influence in Pittsburgh. Per the city’s police blotter, Huggins, 69, failed standard field sobriety tests and was placed into custody without incident.
Huggins previously was charged with drunken driving in 2004, when he was the coach at Cincinnati, and later pleaded no contest.Friday’s arrest was the second offseason incident of note involving Huggins, a West Virginia graduate who had coached his alma mater since 2007 and was the winningest active coach in men’s college basketball.
According to the blotter, Pittsburgh police observed Huggins’s vehicle blocking traffic in the middle of the road at about 8:30 p.m. Friday, with the side door of his SUV open and the vehicle sporting a flat and shredded tire. Per the AP, Huggins told an officer that he had been at a basketball camp in Sherrodsville, Ohio, which is about 80 miles away; an officer said Huggins was asked multiple times what city he was in and did not respond correctly.
Huggins has a career record of 935-414 as a head coach, which includes three seasons at NAIA Walsh University, five at Akron, 16 at Cincinnati, one at Kansas State and 16 at West Virginia. In his 41 seasons, his teams reached the NCAA tournament 26 times. He was inducted to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame last year. His record over 38 seasons as a Division I head coach is 863-389 .
“Coach Huggins informed us of his intent to retire and has submitted his letter of resignation, and we have accepted it in light of recent events,” WVU President Gordon Gee and Athletic Director Wren Baker said in a statement. “We support his decision so that he can focus on his health and family. On behalf of West Virginia University, we share our appreciation for his service to our University, our community and our state.
