Luna Park Cafe in West Seattle was the target of a late-night heist, with thieves making off with hundreds of eggs and other food items. The owner, Heong Park, managed to stop the thieves before they could take everything, but the incident highlights the challenges faced by small businesses grappling with rising food costs and supply chain issues.

Hundreds of eggs went missing from a West Seattle restaurant in what police are calling a 'breakfast heist.' The theft occurred in the early morning hours of February 5th in the area of S.W. Manning Street and S.W. Avalon Way. Officers responded to the Luna Park Cafe at approximately 4:42 a.m. after someone at the business reported 'rotten activity seen live on security cameras.

' Two men were captured on video entering the restaurant's refrigerated shed and taking boxes containing about 540 eggs, valued at approximately $387, according to the Seattle Police Department (SPD). In addition to the eggs, the establishment reported that bacon, ground beef, blueberries, and other egg products were also taken, totaling $780 in stolen goods. The stolen items were seen being loaded into a van on video. The owner of Luna Park Cafe says he rushed to the vehicle after being notified of the theft and managed to stop the men from taking more. Heong Park, the owner of Luna Park Cafe, stated that because eggs are currently expensive and difficult to obtain due to the bird flu outbreak, this incident has been particularly challenging for the small business. 'It's scary, and now we are worried that they are going to come back,' he said. Heong Park explained that when he woke up at 3 a.m. on Wednesday, he never anticipated finding these 'hard-boiled burglars' stealing over 500 eggs and other items from his restaurant. 'My landlord called me about 10 minutes later and said someone broke into the restaurant, you need to get there,' Park shared. After receiving the call, he quickly made his way to the cafe. 'I spotted a white van with two guys stealing from my walk-in,' Park said. He clearly disrupted their operation when they saw him pull into the restaurant parking lot. 'As soon as he saw me, he kind of fled the scene,' Park said. 'Luckily I arrived soon enough they left two cases of eggs; they couldn’t steal everything.' Park believes the eggs could be resold at a higher price in the black market due to the current high demand and supply issue. 'It sells pretty well in the grey market,' he explained. 'It’s because it’s hard to get. Right now it’s $120 a case for 15 dozen, but if they steal from us and take it anywhere, people will buy for $80,' he added. By stopping the thieves before they could take everything, Park states that they were able to open for breakfast customers that morning, but it was still a hardship as he had to search for alternative sources to purchase eggs. 'They took three cases of eggs, one case of liquid eggs, three cases of bacon, two cases of bacon bites, two cases of ham, one turkey, and a case of blueberry,' Park listed. 'It’s a rough time for everybody who owns a restaurant, with higher minimum wage, higher food cost. Everything impacts us; we are just a small business.' If you have any information that could help Seattle police solve this case, please call the SPD Tip Line at 206-233-5000.
