“Some staffer is going to pay dearly” for that groan-inducing opening from Amy Klobuchar, says editor PoliticoCharlie. More live analysis of the DemDebate:
Ok, let’s kick things off with a question. Tell me one thing you’re watching for tonightHey, all! I’m watching Pete Buttigieg and how he might “contrast” himself tonight. He’s plateaued in polling and he’s got to get some mojo going again. Don’t think he’ll be attacking anyone directly, but he’ll certainly try to make the generational argument he’s used on the trail. It helps that he’s standing near all the 70-year-olds up there.
But having a debate in Houston could give the politicians from El Paso and San Antonio extra opportunities to stand out compared to other low-polling candidates who are on stage tonight. I expect tonight to be largely about Biden, Warren and Bernie, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the Texas candidates got a little love from the moderators since the debate is on their turf.
Like Democratic consultant Chris Lippincott told Siders for our story: “They have to stay relevant, they have to stay in the discussion, and they have to hope that that is enough to give them enough fundraising, give enough money to their campaigns to keep moving.”I’m keeping a close eye on what topics the moderators choose to focus this on – and whether it plays to certain candidates’ wheelhouses.
“She’s going to affirmatively define her lane in the primary … as Trump relentlessly divides the country, she is uniquely suited to bring the country together to get things done. We don’t do that by longing for the past and looking backwards with nostalgia, or by engaging in ideological fights that further divide the country. we do that by emphasizing the common challenges that keep Americans up at night, which will unite the party and defeat trump.
