Community organizations are bringing together academics and sports

Community organizations in southeastern San Diego are working together to give underserved youth access to opportunities that will help them to succeed in life.

“This has been part of a larger strategy … to enhance the quality of life for residents, and at the same time, increase opportunities for young people to grow and to experience quality education, as well as activities that normally they wouldn’t have in their community,” Jones added. Seventh-grader Yailin Dircio says it’s the relationships she’s forged with teachers and her peers at KAPA, along with academic support she’s received, that are helping her to better prepare for college.

“It’s weird, but it’s cool,” he said, and squash’s uniqueness “is good because you can actually get a scholarship because not a lot of people play it.”
