Acclaimed composer Danny Elfman reveals how his work alongside director Tim Burton on Netflix's Wednesday broke a long-held tradition that was part of their previous collaborations, and how the director responded to breaking this rule. The celebrated director produced the series and helmed a number of episodes, bringing the world of Charles Addams' unusual family to the streaming service, while Elfman composed the theme tune while working alongside Chris Bacon to develop the soundtrack.
While Elfman stated that Burton had always been firm in avoiding featuring previous theme tunes in his work when developing projects based on existing properties, the director allowed the composer to incorporate elements of the iconic 60s show's theme back into the Netflix series' score. And the beauty of the original theme, which I love so much, is that I could be playing playing playing like this whole piece of music, and end with . It's the easiest theme in the world to create a connection to. And every now and then I would sneak in, go and see if Tim was going to, like, smack me down. And he'd listen and he'd go "... Okay", and I was like "Yes!".
