The James Webb Space Telescope’s first images aren’t just breathtaking — they contain a wealth of scientific insights and clues that researchers are eager to pursue.

WASHINGTON, United States – This image released by NASA on July 12, 2022, shows Stephan’s Quintet captured by the James Webb Space Telescope , a visual grouping of five galaxies, in a new light. This enormous mosaic is JWST’s largest image to date, covering about one-fifth of the Moon’s diameter. It contains over 150 million pixels and is constructed from almost 1,000 separate image files.

NASA astrophysicist Amber Straughn said she was struck by ”the astounding detail that you can see in some of these galaxies.”Plus, added NASA astrophysicist Jane Rigby, the image can teach us more about mysterious dark matter, which is thought to comprise 85 percent of matter in the universe — and is the main cause of the cosmic magnifying effect.

The telescope achieved this by analyzing starlight filtered through the planet’s atmosphere as it moves across the star, to the unfiltered starlight detected when the planet is beside the star — a technique called spectroscopy that no other instrument can do at the same detail. This image released by NASA on July 12, 2022, from the Mid-Infrared Instrument on the James Webb Space Telescope shows never-before-seen details of Stephan’s Quintet, a visual grouping of five galaxies. MIRI pierced through dust-enshrouded regions to reveal huge shock waves and tidal tails, gas and stars stripped from the outer regions of the galaxies by interactions. It also unveiled hidden areas of star formation.
