We recommend in the race for Highland Park ISD Place 6 | Opinion
All of those positions are similar to those taken by Calce, a traditionalist who favors less technology in classrooms and a return to basics like handwriting. He raises concerns we’ve heard from other quarters about schools teaching students what to think instead of how to think. He said he would like to see more transparent public debate among trustees, and he reasoned, rightly we think, that the best public discourse emerges from a diversity of voices.
Calce told us both of his own children are homeschooled, after they were pulled out of HPISD twice for what he described as poor instruction. He said the issue that spurred him to get involved was the district’s mask mandate during the pandemic. Koche told us she agrees with her opponent on many policy issues but takes a collaborative approach to reform.
“I’ve earned the trust and respect of people in the district — even people I disagree with — so that we can work together in constructive ways and keep our focus on what’s best for our kids,” she told us. This race is between a proven, informed public servant and a thoughtful newcomer who raises important questions but isn’t deeply connected to his home school district. HPISD trustees should listen to concerns from Calce and other parents about novel, tech-dependent approaches to learning, but voters should elect Koch, who has proven she can get the work of reform done.We welcome your thoughts in a letter to the editor.
