‘Pretty scary time’ — Harlandale ISD officials know their bond election will be a hard sell
Construction financed by a 2015 bond program continues at the McCollum High School auditorium in Harlandale ISD, which will ask voters May 7 to approve a new round of bond debt totalling $125 million.Starting next week, voters will begin to weigh in on Harlandale Independent School District’s $125 million bond proposal, and district officials who have seen area bond elections fail in the past year are nervous.
If all three propositions are approved, the bond debt is expected to increase the school district’s property tax rate by 6.6 cents per $100 assessed value of taxable property. Currently the tax rate is $1.40 per $100.Harlandale ISD’s executive director of operations, Juan Hinojosa, talks last week about the need to replace the cinder track at McCollum High School with an all-weather surface that could be used by the public as well as students.
“UTSA has one of the largest cybersecurity programs in higher ed,” Soto said. “A&M-San Antonio is also building theirs. So, we want to piggy-back off of that… and that’s one of the main focuses of the CTE building.” McCollum High School JROTC Cadet Makayla Crenshaw calls out commands last week in a classroom at the rear of the school’s gym. The school district is asking voters May 7 to approve three bond propositions totalling $125 million, the largest of which would pay for a JROTC building, among other improvements.Having these paths could help the district compete and retain students who might not see themselves in a college setting, Soto said.
“We want to provide our children the opportunity to perform in our district, instead of always traveling somewhere else to have that platform,” he said. Maintenance is performed on Memorial Stadium in Harlandale ISD, which is asking voters May 7 to approve a new round of bond debt totalling $125 million. Proposition C would fund the next phase of stadium renovations.Get San Antonio education news sent directly to your inbox
