The medical community is the frontline of the addiction crisis.
Opioid overdoses have been one of the most urgent healthcare emergencies in the United States for over two decades. We have moved from overprescribing pharmaceutical opioids such as OxyContin to users switching from prescription opioids to heroin. Now, we have the proliferation of potent synthetic opioids such as fentanyl.
Nurse practitioners and physician assistants write one-fifth of perioperative opioid prescriptions and one-quarter of refill prescriptions for opioids.
Pennsylvania’s physician assistants and nurse practitioners also have prescriptive rights, but their training is not equivalent to osteopathic or allopathic doctors. These allied health professionals are vital members of patients’ continuum of care and practice under physicians’ supervision. And like doctors, they should receive more targeted opioid and pain management education before they begin to serve patients.
Soon, patients can have confidence that if their PA or NP considers prescribing opioids, their providers have been fully trained on opioid prescribing best practices and, more importantly, alternative pain management modalities. That is the shared goal of the Appalachian Regional Commission, the Pennsylvania General Assembly, and the Rothman Opioid Foundation. We encourage all PA and NP training programs to adopt this invaluable yet free resource.
