If you’re the friend who gets the most mosquito bites, science says it might not be a cruel random phenomenon.

There's always that one friend or family member who gets destroyed on camping trips by mosquito bites. While it seems like a cruel and unusual punishment cast on those unlucky victims by the gods, scientists say they finally have a reason how and why mosquitoes appear to pick their targets.

Researchers found that different skin compounds actually attract mosquito species most commonly known to spread the viruses that cause dengue, yellow fever, and Zika, specifically known asSixty-four volunteers wore nylon sleeves and were exposed to a host of mosquitoes in a glass chamber on their arms for six hours over the course of the study. Researchers found that attractiveness of the volunteers to mosquitoes varied quite widely.

"Samples from the most attractive volunteer were four times as enticing to mosquitoes as those from the next most attractive volunteer—and over 100 times more attractive than those from the two least attractive people," researchers noted. A recent study found physically active younger adults could see big savings in Medicare costs as senior citizens.

Scientists also found that mosquitoes actually use molecules called co-receptors to help detect odors on human skin.
