Record crowd for National Women's Soccer League game will watch first-place club against rival Angel City FC
The National Women’s Soccer League club made the announcement Thursday morning, more than two weeks ahead of the Sept. 17 match against rival Angel City FC.it had sold more than 27,000 tickets to the game, which would guarantee the crowd would be the largest in NWSL history, exceeding the 25,218 who watched a 2019 game in Portland.
The Wave did not say how many seats had been sold, only that “every seat in Snapdragon Stadium that was made available to the club based on the optimal set-up to view soccer” was gone. San Diego State, which built and owns the stadium, has said there are 33,000 seats for football with room for another 2,000 in standing-room areas.
“This is a great reflection of the momentum we see in women’s sports,” San Diego Wave FC President Jill Ellis said in a statement. “We’ve sold all of our inventory, it’s incredible. We should celebrate this but we should now expect it, big crowds for women’s professional sports.”The Wave, which is in first place in the NWSL, played its earlier home games at Torero Stadium on the campus of the University of San Diego. Capacity there was 6,100 and the Wave averaged just over 5,000 fans per game.
The club’s final regular-season game, Sept. 30 against North Carolina, also will be played at Snapdragon. Tickets for that game will go on sale at 10 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 9.
