Analzing whether cornerback Renardo Green was the right pick for the San Francisco 49ers in Round 2 of the NFL Draft.
They desperately needed an offensive lineman, and they liked Washington offensive tackle Roger Rosengarten. They visited him at his Pro Day and he worked out with Joe Staley in the offseason. He seemed like a perfect fit. They probably thought he would drop to them at pick no. 63, and he almost did.
But with pick no. 62, the Ravens drafted Rosengarten, which left the 49ers in a tricky spot. They could stay at pick no. 63 and take the best offensive tackle available -- Kingsley Suamataia -- or trade down. They traded down. One spot. With the Chiefs. Who drafted Suamataia. And thenTo be fair, cornerback is a big need for the 49ers, and Green could be a good one.
And it's strange that the 49ers would pass on an offensive tackle that the Chiefs would trade up to get. The 49ers are objectively terrible at drafting offensive tackles, while the Chiefs aren't. If they like an offensive tackle prospect in the draft, the 49ers probably should, too. In eight years, John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan have drafted just four offensive tackles -- Mike McGlinchey, Colton McKivitz, Jaylon Moore and Justin Skule. That's it. It seems that very few offensive tackles fit the 49ers system, which is weird. Because McKivitz fits the system, but the 49ers still can't run effectively to his side, and they have to give him help in pass protection.
