Starting 10 a.m. July 20, the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens’ 14-week-old jaguar cub, Banks, will be on public display. He was born April 7.
Banks got his name with the help of a public poll. About 700 names were submitted during a week-longthat began June 21. Zoo staff selected a top four: Banks, Zuco, Duwey and Tobai, then ran a 24-hour poll to choose the most fitting of the four on Instagram and Twitter. Banks narrowly came out on top with 30% of the votes.
The name is in homage to the St. Johns River and the home of the Jacksonville Jaguars, long known as The Bank after stadium sponsor TIAA Bank. It received 2,185 votes. The contest, in partnership with the Jaguars Foundation, also drew almost $21,500 in donations, according to theJaguars are listed as"near threatened" on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species. Although they once roamed from central Argentina to the southwestern United States. they’ve lost more than half of their original territory since the 1880s, according to the zoo.
