Price-leading EV due in 2027 could be developed and produced alongside the next-generation Renault Twingo
Volkswagen chairman Thomas Schäfer says the German car maker will soon decide between four different internal proposals for its upcoming entry-level ID 1 – a car he previously said would carry a £17,000 price tag. Conceived as a replacement for the 11-year-old e-Up, the new model is planned to go on sale across Europe by the end of 2027 before entering other global markets as Volkswagen’s smallest and most affordable electric offering.
Development and production costs can be amortised across other Volkswagen Group brands, including Skoda and Seat/Cupra, admitted the Volkswagen CEO, adding, “We will make the decision in the short term”. Recent reports suggest Volkswagen could join forces with Renault and possibly develop and produce the ID 1 in partnership with the Twingo.
