A volcanic earthquake and 59 rockfall events were monitored in Mayon volcano over the last 24 hours, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said on Saturday. READ HERE:
In its 5 a.m. update, Phivolcs said that the rockfall events resulted in lava debris on the south and southeastern gullies within 1,500 meters from the summit crater.Philvocs said that a 'hazardous' eruption would likely occur within weeks or even days as Mayon is currently in a relatively high level of unrest as magma forms at the crater.
Phivolcs said a fair crater glow or 'banaag' and the incandescent rockfall from new lava can be seen at the summit of Mayon.Phivolcs said Alert Level 3 remains and advises civil aviation authorities to avoid flying close to the volcano's summit as ashes from any sudden eruption can be hazardous to aircraft.Based on the current prevailing wind pattern, an ashfall event may likely occur on the south side of the volcano.
