The Gyrosphere depot from “Jurassic World,” from which the glass orb vehicles depart to roll through the fields with the dinosaurs, has been converted into a place for wedding ceremonies. That’s another role Kualoa Ranch plays — it’s a popular wedding venue.
There are almost always active film shoots on the ranch, my guide said, but they only give the staff “red herring” titles so no one can give any information away. As much as it’s a “Jurassic” adventure tour, there’s more of “Jurassic World” and “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” to experience than there is of the original. Most of the filming of the first movie took place on Kauai, but a category four hurricane destroyed the sets just before filming wrapped. Steven Spielberg moved the production to Oahu for the final few days of Hawaii filming, then finished the movie in LA.
Ironically, despite Kualoa Ranch’s status as home to the dinosaurs, the volcanic activity that formed the Hawaiian islands didn’t start until 65 million years ago, as the last of the dinosaurs were going extinct. In fact, the Jurassic period pre-dates Hawaii by as much as 135 million years. The film dinosaurs, then, are the only ones to ever have set foot in Hawaii. Those, and of course, that plastic dino chasing me through the valley.
