Bicyclist went where cars couldn’t and documented effects of atmospheric river deluges

Highlighting how severely the rustic roads through the redwoods got hit, cyclist Larry Rairden rode his bicycle throughout the mountains recently — going where cars couldn’t — and put together a YouTube video that shows the extent of the devastation. He called his three-minute video “Tour de Disaster.”
Rairden lives in Houston now. He comes back to the Bay Area regularly on vacation to bicycle. Staying at a hotel in Scotts Valley shortly after the rains stopped, he set out on his Trek Madone every day between Jan. 15 and Jan. 24, riding more than 300 miles on back roads and snapping photos with his iPhone.
Storms have hammered the roads in other wet winters, notably 2017, 1998 and 1982. Many of the winding two-lane routes aren’t up to modern standards. They were built in the 1800s, sometimes by loggers as private toll roads. They were intended for horse-drawn wagons and were sometimes constructed too close to steep, landslide-prone hillsides or creeks that can explode out of their banks during big winter storms.
In most cases, there are alternate routes. At China Grade, for example, several dozen families now have a 45-minute detour. In other places, more people are affected. A drone photograph shows a landslide that occurred Jan. 9, 2023, closing Highway 9 in the Santa Cruz Mountains near Glen Arbor Road. Caltrans said Highway 9 will be closed in that location until March 4 while its crews stabilize the hillside, install drains, repair the roadway and shore up a damaged retaining wall. A detour routes traffic around the slide through adjacent neighborhoods.
