New, 6 metric ton satellite, ViaSat-3 Americas, is the first of three launching over the next 12 months to provide global coverage for in-flight connectivity, fixed broadband.

Carlsbad-based Viasat’s next-generation Internet satellite blasted into orbit Sunday night from Kennedy Space Center in Florida on a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket.

ViaSat-3 has 25 kilowatts of power and a massive antenna, which combined serve as an amplifier to help give the satellite its 1,000 megabits per second capacity. With that bandwidth, the company expects to be able to deliver faster speeds and more data to customers. The 14,000-pound satellite will spend the next several weeks undergoing tests and climbing to its final orbital slot at the equator some 22,000 miles above Earth. It is expected to begin beaming down bandwidth by mid-summer.A second ViaSat-3 is slated to launch this fall, providing coverage over Europe, the Middle East and Africa, followed roughly six months later by ViaSat-3 Asia-Pacific.
