Two British veterans join 250 parachutists from the Royal Air Force and Parachute Regiment in a commemorative parachute descent in Sannerville, France, one day before the 75th anniversary of D-Day.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has called it a"gift of history" that she is able to participate in the ceremony on the southern coast of England commemorating the 75th anniversary of D-Day.

Tom Rice of San Diego was among some 200 parachutists who filled the Normandy skies for the 75th anniversary of D-Day. They were honoring the airborne soldiers who jumped into gunfire and death ahead of the June 6, 1944, seaborne invasion.Rice said afterward,"it went perfect, perfect jump." He continued,"I feel great. I'd go up and do it all again."

Addressing the event, 99-year-old D-Day veteran John Jenkins said:"It is right that the courage and sacrifice of so many is being honored 75 years on. We must never forget." In closing, the queen said:"Many of them would never return, and the heroism, courage and sacrifice of those who lost their lives will never be forgotten. It is with humility and pleasure, on behalf of the entire country —indeed the whole free world— that I say to you all, thank you."Leaders of World War II allies have been reading first-hand testimonies from participants in the conflict during a ceremony in England to mark the 75th anniversary of D-Day.

Before he began Macron said:"First, let me thank you sincerely, on behalf of my nation" — drawing cheers from spectators gathered in Portsmouth. Queen Elizabeth II, U.S. President Donald Trump, other leaders of the wartime Allies — as well as German Chancellor Angela Merkel — joined some 300 World War II veterans at the seaside ceremony in Portsmouth Wednesday.

He said the prospect of being here, as a representative of a dwindling group, makes him pause. He strains to hold back the tears.
