A missing teen wasn't in the Vatican tombs — and neither were the princess bones supposed to be buried there.
Associated PressPietro Orlandi, brother of Emanuela Orlandi who when missing in 1983, second from right, stands by his Laura Sgro as she speaks to the media after the Vatican reopened two tombs in the Teutonic Cemetery inside the Vatican, Thursday, July 11, 2019. The Vatican opened two tombs near St. Peter's Basilica after further investigation into the case of the 15-year-old daughter of a Vatican employee, who never returned after heading out to a music lesson in Rome.
The Vatican said in a statement that the opening of the tombs"yielded a negative outcome. No human remains nor funereal urns were found." A Holy See spokesman, Alessandro Gisotti, said the Vatican is combing through documentation about two structural projects that involved the cemetery area, one in the late 1800s, and the other between the 1960s and 1970s, in case that work might explain why the princesses' remains weren't there.
