Vacations are meant to be relaxing departures from our daily lives. But in reality, unplugging from modern life for a week takes a lot of work, writes columnist Leslie Kouba.

CLEVELAND, Ohio – School is winding down…finally. Temperatures are rising nicely. And now the beach is calling my name, beseechingly. It’s vacation time.

Once a year, I’m fortunate enough to visit the Outer Banks of North Carolina with a large group of friends. Sharing costs makes it possible to stay in one of those personally unaffordable giant beach houses. You know the kind – with three or four floors of ocean-facing bedrooms, several “living rooms,” a super big kitchen with two super big refrigerators, balconies all around and a heated swimming pool and hot tub. A few steps away from the surf, we’ll enjoy a happy week being lazy and crazy.
