Some big changes are coming to school lunches next year, with the federal government releasing new nutrition guidelines that will cut back on both sugar and salt.
Cereal, pizza, and chocolate milk found in school cafeterias are among the items that will soon contain less salt and sugar. Breakfast and lunch menus are getting a makeover after the U.S. Department of Agriculture recently released new nutritional guidelines for schools - further limiting the amount of sodium and added sugar found in school meals. Naim Walcott is the lunch manager for Westhampton Beach Schools. He says changes are already in the works as nutrition is a priority in the district.
" According to the USDA, schools will not be required to make any changes to their menus this coming fall but changes have to be phased in by 2027."Cereals, yogurt are now going to have a much lower sugar intake on them," said Yohana Arevalo who is the School Lunch Program Coordinator with the Uniondale School District. The Uniondale School District is also on board with the changes.
