THE United States (US) is not keen on forming another four-member country alliance or 'new quad' partnership in the Indo-Pacific involving the US, Japan, South Korea and the Philippines.
US Assistant Secretary of State Daniel Kritenbrink made the remark when asked whether Washington is looking to establish a new Quad in East Asia based on its treaties with Tokyo, Seoul, and Manila.'I guess regarding what you called, a new Quad, I would say, 'no.' We're not looking to establish a new quad,' Kritenbrink said in an online press briefing Wednesday .'We're not looking to establish any new formal mechanisms in the Indo-Pacific at this point,' he said.
Kritenbrink, however, raised the possibility that the US, Japan, and the Philippines may expand their defense cooperation. The same goal can be pursued among the US, Australia, and the Philippines.'I think it's important to note here too that an important element of our engagement as well is that I think it's important to identify synergies between like-minded partners and explore ways in which informal cooperation might be conducted on a trilateral or other basis,' he said.
